How GATE – Mathematics is helpful to BTech students

Unless other GATE papers, GATE-Mathematics exam is for MSc – mathematics students and not just for BTech-MTech students, whose primary goal is to go for PhD in maths.  ( In contrast, if you see syllabus of this exam it is BSc-maths level syllabus. More BSc and a little MSc level syllabus)

BTech/BE and MSc-Math students who are in final year or passout can apply for GATE-Maths exam. There is no constraint on what is your branch in BTech.

If you qualify GATE-MA, you can apply in any IITs- NITs and almost all CFTI for PhD program in maths. You can’t apply for MSc-math with GATE score. If you are a BTech student and looking for MSc or MSc-PhD-integrated than there are other exams (like JAM. look at other posts on my blog). You may have doubt that how a BE/BTech student can go directly in PhD. But since you have studied a little maths in BTech and a little while preparing for GATE, you know BSc level maths and PhD first one year or one and half year will be for course work , you will face no problem ( depends on institute. In some inst. u may face a little prob. So what you should go for?? MSc or PhD??? Try to get into MSc through JAM and other exams mentioned below.. At same time also go for exam for PhD like GATE and NET. If you get admission in both then go for PhD if u have 4-6 years and you are passionate enough.  I am suggesting to go for direct PhD and the only reason is you will get money during your PhD.

Not just GATE, but you should also appear for exams like:

  1. JAM for MSc and integrated MSc-PhD in IISERs, CSIR NET/JRF exam for PhD
  2. NBHM exams for MSc and for PhD
  3. Exams by TIFR, ISI, CMI, IISERs

CSIR NET/JRF exam is conducted twice a year. The score of NBHM exam will be considered in almost all the institutes for Ph.D. ( IISERs also give admission on this score.) Look at previous year question papers of this exams.

PS: while applying for CSIR-Net, keep following things in mind.(Many people are facing prob bcoz of this mistakes)

  1. Dont do spelling mistake in your Name while filing the form.
  2. Put date of birth as in 10th std cert.
  3. If you come under other quota then don’t do spelling mistake in father’s name. put it as it appears in cast certificate.

PS. Try to clear both- NET and GATE. Because CSIR-NET is very reluctant to give stipend on time and not responsive at all. While in GATE, u will get stipend on time and from the first month you start PhD.

Good luck friends.

If you have any questions you can ask here in comment section. But before that, please go through my other posts on this blog and also look at comments. I am sure you will get your answer.

    1. Yes . You are eligible to write Gate exam.

If you clear GATE with good rank then you can directly go into PhD.

Based on Gate result you can’t get admission in MSc. (Or I don’t know institute which give admission based on Gate result).
If u like pure mathematics then opt for pure mathematics.

A BTech student who qualified gate or CSIR Net jrf can opt for all the programs that a MSc student can opt for.

And do you know institute in Chennai which gives good coaching for gate mathematics??

    1. It’s amazing that after 5 years in IT and 3 year of parenting you are looking for PhD in mathematics. I will be ready for any help you need in this regard. I am sure that you will perform excellent in GATE/JAM next year.

Yes. It is possible to manage direct PhD. Since you are a BE student you have to do course work for around 3 semesters in PhD. It is something like you will study subjects you didn’t study because of not having MSc degree. There will be one benefit for you. In MSc we study those subjects also which have no use in our PhD.

For GATE you have to study somany subjects, while my advice is to focus on NET/JRF exam. Do Real analysis, Linear Algebra and Aptitude and you will qualify JRF. Then you can get in IIT Madras very easily.

I have no info on coaching in chennai. Self study will only help for JRF.

Please fill free to ask for any help. I will be very happy if you can go ahead in mathematic.

      Edit:

Yes the syllabus looks huge and most of them are totally new to me.
Are you sure that for PhD in Mathematics at IIT Madras they are recruiting from NET exam.Do you know somebody who had joined like that. I just now checked the brochure where they had mentioned like you need to have a valid gate score for BE graduates, whereas Master of Science graduates can have NET/NBHM/INSPIRE scores.

    1. If you clear JRF in June 2017, you can join for PhD. Admission process starts immediately after declaration of result. You should apply at IISc, Old iisers, old IITs. Other than this , you can join research projects in funded by UGC , CSIR etc… Here you will be working as JRF. You will get PhD also in this way. I hv not much info on this.

If you can’t qualify JRF, but qualify NET, then you can apply for PhD in some institutes for PhD. You have to check eligibility criteria of that respective institute.

Does that mean that i wouldn’t need an MTech to do the PhD if I just qualify the NET?
Currently I have applied for Mathematical Sciences for the NET and if I clear the JRF, then for PhD will i have to continue with Mathematical sciences?

No one has a clear idea on this. But then the NET eligibility includes B.Tech as one. Can you please enquire about it and inform?

        Thanks for the help sir.

      2. You dont need MTech to do PhD if you qualify NET-JRF-Mathematics.

        Like

  5. While filling form of CSIR NET, there were two options. 1. Applying for net only 2. Applying for JRF.

If you have chosen 1st option then no matter how much marks you get, you will not be considered for JRF. If have chosen 2nd option then if u get marks above cutoff of JRF then you qualify JRF and NET both. If u just get above NET but below JRF then you qualify just NET.

Yes. No need to do Mtech. U can do PhD directly. Yes. You have to do PhD in maths. You will have options like pure maths , applied maths…

It is batter you try to qualify JRF. Institutes will happily give you admission(this is not true for many IITs) because stipend you will get will come from CSIR UGC and not from budget of institute which is not the case in GATE (Reputed inst. dont care. they hv money. Everything depends on intrview only. they dont care if u r 1st ranker) .

    Hi Ravi Sir,
I completed B.E., by 2012 and MBA in finance by 2015 from good B-School.Now working in IT sector with good pay.But I did not like my job. From my childhood I had interest in maths and did so many research in maths. But I took very bad decision and did BE and MBA but now I hate my job.So I want to do P.hD in maths full time from IIT or IISC or CMI etc.,So please answer my queries. It will be of great help for me
1)If I do P.hD maths, will I be eligible for teaching jobs in colleges or universities because many teaching jobs for maths ask M.Sc maths + P.hD maths.
2)I am 26 now.Could I write GATE or JAM or CSIR-NET at this age?Is it too late?
.I cant leave my job for preparing exams as I invested huge amount for my MBA.I can leave my job only if I get P.hD admission. But I hope I could try GATE or CSIR -NET even though I am not from maths background.Even if I fail I will try continously try for some more years also.
    So please guide me sir.

If you do PhD then I no worry at all. you can go for Lecturer job. You can go for postdoc also. Who is gonna ask for MSc!! Your BE/BTech degree will be equivalent to MSc.

you have to go to GATE / CSIR-NET brochure for age criteria. It is never too late.

Wish you good luck for this exciting world of mathematics. 🙂

“Did so many research in maths”-I mean in my schooling I like maths a lot.So used to study it deeply and found some formulae(Ofcourse those were already found) but I tried myself without referring them and succeeded.I did so many research in mathematics like this.In this way I would have made excellent career in maths if I studied maths. But I took bad decision.

Then regarding B.E.,=M.Sc-Maths criteria, the UGC minimum qualification browser tells only B.Sc and M.Sc., in maths is eligible for faculty position.I wrote my detailed query to UGC through RTI but got some completely unrelevant stupid answer from them.Thats why asked you.

Once again thanks for your guidance to people who switch from Engineering to Pure Maths area

Not having a B.Sc. (but with M.Sc.), will there any problem in pursuing teaching career?
What are the various other courses can I do applying for JAM?

Sir, I was getting admission at ISI in M.Math course this year but unfortunately due to some mistake in admission procedure, I was thrown out of counselling process after first round and they are not willing to rectify the mistake. So, now I am thinking to get admission in some college through CSIR NET.
