Guide for a B.tech student to join MSc in mathematics

Hello friends,

I completed my BE in biomedical engineering from LD College, Gujarat in 2011-2015.

Now I am in MSc in mathematics & scientific computing at NIT-Warangal (2015-2017 batch).

If you are a BE or B.Tech student and want to go in mathematics than it is not much difficult task.

JAM(Joint Admission test for MSc) is very useful for us. If you qualify JAM then you can get admission in IISc, most IITs, few NITs, and and some CFTIs.

Few IITs have eligibility criteria of requiring BSc with Major.

Most of IITs need only four sem study of mathematics which we generally study in our BE or BTech. (Operations research, Numerical Methods etc… also counts in mathematical subject. Just in case you are worrying if you have studied math only for three sems)

Now if u do Math of BSc level nicely then you should also give CSIR-NET-JRF exam. If you qualify this exam then after BE/BTech no need to do MSc. Directly go for PHd . During your phd from any institute, CSIR will give you Rs 25000(+30% of 25000 as HRA) per month for first two year of phd and 28000 per month afterward for three year.

JAM exam brochure give you all required details…

Other Useful exams are CMI, TIFR, ISI, NBHM, GATE etc…

How to prepare for this exams : See other posts on this blog.

Wish you good luck friends

They are asking for just Bachelor Degree.
If you qualify the exam then few IITs will ask for four sem study of mathematics. But after you pay fees and go to respective institute , they will not cancle your admission. Go through this post https://ravihir.wordpress.com/2016/04/10/ccmn-2016-counseling-portal-is-active-now/

Why not to give both exams? For GATE you need MSc level maths. If you BSc level maths is good then you can qualify GATE. But with GATE you will directly get admission in PhD and not in MSc.

    Hello sir.
Sir I got 1494 (st) rank in IIT jam 2018 mathematics. And I completed my b.tech from ece branch . While filling ccmn nit warangal is not providing in list of choices only one option is showing for b.tech.i.e. Nit Arunachal Pradesh.my question is how you have done your m.sc maths from nit warangal ?
And other questions is : I have filled choices for iits will they accept my application for or will they reject my application.as I have studied 4 maths subject in my graduation i.e(m-1, mathematical method,M-3, probability).in my first 2 subjects and 2-1 another 2 subjects . Please reply my query sir

    1. Since last two year, CCMN portal has changed their portal and not allowing Btech students to add choices… In my time I was able to add choices. If u look at brochure of JAM, many IITs ask 4sam study of math, and they are not any specific on that. So IITs will not reject you.

Sir, I have studied mathematics only for 2 semesters of my B.Tech.. In other sem I had few subjects like Artificial Neural Networking and Measurement and Instrumentation, which required little application of applied mathematics. I got 343 rank in JAM mathematics and I am from OBC category. I wasn’t allotted any seat in 1st round of counselling, but I saw the list of opening and closing rank and in some of the courses closing rank is below my rank, but still I was not provided any seat. Do you have idea, what may be the reason

Sir, have you witnessed any such case earlier. What may be the reason. I chose those courses and closing ranks for those courses were between 350 to 500. Still they didn’t allot me seat there. I have heard they check those eligibility criteria only after admission. So, its highly unlikely that they didn’t allot me seat because of not studying maths for 4 sem.

One reason I can think is look if your obc certificate is rejected or not…
3 years ago, they used to publish a list whose obc certificate is rejected…

No other reason is coming in my mind

I e-mailed them and they have replied me. They confirmed that I didn’t meet minimum educational qualification as I had only 2 pure math courses. I thought they consider these things only during admission process.
I have again mailed them saying that I had few courses like “Artificial Neural Network” & “Measurement & Instrumentation” which had application of mathematics.
